1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Reflection
Three claims here, and each dismantles a lie temptation tells. First: "no temptation has taken you except what is common to man." The shame that says you're uniquely broken, that no one else struggles with this — false. Isolation is temptation's most effective tool, and this cuts it off. Second: God is faithful and won't let you be tempted beyond what you're able. Note the guarantee rests on his faithfulness, not your willpower. Third, and most practical: he provides "the way of escape." That phrasing implies something concrete rather than abstract endurance — an actual exit, a door in the room. Which means part of resisting temptation is looking for it. Most failures happen not because the exit was missing but because we didn't look, or looked and decided to stay a little longer. The verse doesn't promise the pressure disappears. It promises the room is never sealed.
Historical Context
Paul has just recounted Israel's failures in the wilderness as cautionary examples. This verse follows as reassurance — the warnings are real, but so is God's provision for those under pressure.
Application for Today
Two practical things: your temptation is not unique, so isolation is lying to you. And there is a way out — which means part of resisting is looking for the exit rather than negotiating with the temptation.
A Prayer
God, I feel alone in this and like it's stronger than I am. Thank you that neither is true. Show me the way out you've provided — and give me the sense to take it instead of talking myself into staying.
