Colossians 3:15

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.”

Reflection

The word translated "rule" is drawn from the world of athletic contests — it's the word for an umpire or referee, the one who makes the call and settles the dispute. Paul is picturing the peace of God as an official inside you, deciding what stays and what gets whistled out of bounds. That's a strikingly practical image. When two courses of action pull at you, or resentment competes with grace, peace is given the authority to make the ruling. It's not a vague hope that things feel calm; it's a functioning decision-maker in the heart. Notice, too, how communal this is. "You were called in one body" — Paul isn't only talking about private inner calm but about peace as the referee of how a community treats one another. And he tacks on a small, easily-skipped command: "be thankful." Gratitude keeps appearing next to peace in Paul's letters, as if the two travel together. A grateful heart is a peaceful one; a grumbling heart forfeits the peace it was offered. Let peace make the calls, and let thanks be the atmosphere it works in.

Historical Context

Part of Paul's instructions to the Colossian church on how to live as people transformed by Christ — bearing with each other, forgiving, loving. Verse 15 sits in a list of communal virtues, which is why the "one body" framing matters.

Application for Today

Next time you're torn on a decision or stewing in conflict, ask which option you can pursue and keep the peace of God — let that be the umpire. And pair it with gratitude: name what you're thankful for before you act. Peace and thanksgiving reinforce each other; practicing one strengthens the other.

A Prayer

God, let your peace be the referee in me today — settling my decisions, calling out the resentment I want to nurse. Make me thankful, so that peace has room to rule. Help me carry it into how I treat the people around me.
