Colossians 3:17
“Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Reflection
"Whatever you do" is doing the heavy lifting. Paul refuses to let life split into sacred and secular halves — the religious parts that count and the mundane parts that don't. Word or deed, all of it, gets swept into the same category: done in the name of the Lord Jesus. That's either exhausting or liberating depending on how you hear it. Heard as a demand for constant spiritual performance, it crushes. Heard as Paul intends it, it dignifies. The dishes, the commute, the unglamorous work nobody notices — none of it is outside the reach of meaning. And once again gratitude is bolted on at the end, as it is nearly every time Paul writes about daily life. He seems to regard thanksgiving as the atmosphere ordinary work is meant to happen in. Not a task added to the list, but the air the list is carried out in.
Historical Context
The close of Paul's instructions on Christian living. He has just described forgiveness, love, and peace within the community; this verse widens the frame to cover the whole of ordinary life, not only its religious parts.
Application for Today
Pick the least spiritual task on your list today — the email, the dishes, the errand — and do it deliberately as something offered rather than endured. The task won't change. What it means might.
A Prayer
Jesus, I've been dividing my life into the parts that matter to you and the parts that don't. Collapse that line. Let the ordinary work of today be done in your name, and let me be grateful in the middle of it.
