“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.”
Reflection
The word behind "workmanship" is the root of our word poem — a made thing, crafted with intent. That's the claim: you are not an accident or a self-assembled project but something authored. And notice the order Paul establishes. The good works come after the making, not before it. He has just spent two verses insisting salvation isn't earned by works; here he explains what works are actually for. They're not the price of admission but the purpose of the craftsmanship. Then the phrase most people rush past: works "which God prepared before that we would walk in them." Prepared beforehand. The picture isn't of you inventing a purpose from scratch and hoping it's the right one, but of walking into something already laid out. That reframes the anxious modern search for purpose. You're not required to generate significance. You're invited to step into what's been prepared, which usually turns out to be closer and more ordinary than we expect.
Historical Context
Immediately after Paul's famous statement that salvation comes by grace through faith, not works. Verse 10 completes the thought — works are not the cause of salvation but its intended result.
