Purpose
The modern search for purpose usually runs as an anxious audit: identify your gifts, find the one right calling, and hope you haven't already missed it. Scripture approaches it from a different direction entirely. The starting point isn't what you're supposed to do but what you already are — God's workmanship, a made thing crafted with intent, the word carrying the same root as poem. The works come after the making, not before it. And they're described as "prepared beforehand," which reframes the whole search. You aren't required to generate significance from scratch and hope you guessed right. You're invited to step into something already laid out, which typically turns out to be nearer and more ordinary than we imagined. Underneath it sits a claim about worth that predates performance: known before being formed, appointed before having done anything at all. If your sense of value rises and falls with your usefulness, these verses cut beneath that. And for the planners among us, there's a companion truth — plan seriously, hold it loosely, because a closed door may mean your steps are being directed rather than that you failed.
