Esther 4:14
“For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place; but you and your father's house will perish. Who knows if you haven't come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Reflection
Mordecai's argument has an edge to it that's often smoothed over. He isn't flattering Esther about her destiny. He says plainly that deliverance will come from somewhere regardless — and that if she stays silent, she and her family will perish anyway. Her position won't protect her. Then the famous line, and note it's a question, not a declaration: who knows whether you haven't come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Mordecai doesn't claim certainty about God's plan. He raises a possibility Esther can't dismiss. The book of Esther never once mentions God by name, which makes this restraint fitting. Providence in this story works quietly, through positioning and timing, never announcing itself. The application isn't that you have a grand destiny. It's the humbler question of what your particular position — access, relationships, timing — might be for.
Historical Context
Mordecai urges Queen Esther to approach the king on behalf of the Jewish people, at the risk of her life. Notably, the book of Esther never mentions God by name.
Application for Today
The question isn't whether you were placed here on purpose — it's what the placement is for. Where are you positioned that someone else isn't? That access is probably the assignment.
A Prayer
God, show me what my position is actually for. Give me courage to use whatever access I have on behalf of someone who has none. If this is the moment, don't let me stay silent.
