Joshua 1:9
“Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
Reflection
Courage is commanded here, which is a strange thing to command. You can't simply order a frightened person to feel brave. But look at what's attached to the command — a reason, not just a demand. "Be strong and courageous... for Yahweh your God is with you." The courage isn't summoned from inside Joshua's own nerve. It's drawn from a fact outside him: God goes where he goes. That's why the command is reasonable. God isn't telling Joshua to manufacture a feeling; he's telling him to act on a truth. Joshua had every reason to be afraid. He was stepping into shoes left by Moses — the greatest leader Israel had known — and leading a nervous people into hostile territory. The task was genuinely bigger than the man. Which is exactly when this verse speaks loudest. Courage, biblically, is not fearlessness. It is moving forward with the fear because Someone trustworthy is beside you. The phrase "wherever you go" leaves no gap — no location, no situation, no future room where God's presence runs out. Whatever threshold you're standing at, the presence crosses it with you before you arrive.
Historical Context
Moses has just died, and Joshua inherits the overwhelming task of leading Israel into the promised land. God repeats "be strong and courageous" several times in this opening chapter — the repetition itself a sign that Joshua needed to hear it more than once, as most of us do.
Application for Today
Name the threshold in front of you — the conversation, the move, the responsibility that feels too big. Then notice this verse doesn't tell you to feel ready. It tells you to go, on the strength of who's going with you. Courage isn't waiting for the fear to leave. It's the first step taken while it's still there.
A Prayer
God, the thing ahead of me feels bigger than I am, and it probably is. But you've promised to be with me wherever I go. Give me the courage that comes not from my own nerve but from your presence. I'll take the step. Go with me.
