“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Reflection
The offer is almost embarrassingly simple. If you lack wisdom, ask. But the phrase that transforms it is "without reproach." God doesn't sigh. He doesn't point out that you should have figured this out already, or remind you that he explained it last time. There's no lecture attached to the gift. Anyone who has been made to feel stupid for asking a question knows how rare that is, and how much courage it usually takes to admit not knowing. James removes the risk entirely. Notice also where this sits — immediately after his teaching on trials. That's not accidental. Hardship is exactly when we most need wisdom and least trust ourselves to have it, when every option looks wrong and our own judgment feels unreliable. Into that, James drops an unconditional offer. The only prerequisite is admitting the lack, which is the one thing pride refuses to do.

Application for Today
Notice the condition isn't cleverness or credentials — it's asking. If you're facing a decision you can't think your way through, treat that not as weakness but as the exact qualification this verse names. Ask plainly, and expect generosity rather than a lecture.
A Prayer
God, I don't know what to do, and pretending otherwise hasn't helped. You said to ask, so I'm asking. Give me wisdom for this decision — and thank you that you won't hold my not knowing against me.
