James 5:16
“Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.”
Reflection
The instruction is horizontal, and that's what makes it uncomfortable. Confess your sins "to one another" — not only privately to God, which is safer and costs nothing socially. James is describing a community where people actually know each other's struggles, and he ties healing to that honesty. There's real wisdom in it. Secrecy is usually what keeps a struggle powerful; things named out loud to a trustworthy person lose a measure of their grip. And notice confession is paired immediately with prayer for one another — the point isn't exposure but care. You confess to someone who will then pray, not to someone who will file it away. The closing line has been variously translated but the sense holds: the prayer of an ordinary righteous person accomplishes a great deal. James adds elsewhere that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. Not a spiritual specialist. Someone ordinary, praying.

The closing instructions of James' letter, dealing with sickness, sin, and the life of the community. The context is explicitly relational — believers caring for one another rather than practicing faith in isolation.
Application for Today
Notice confession here is horizontal — to one another, not only to God. That's harder and more healing. Is there one trustworthy person who knows the thing you've been carrying alone? Secrecy is usually what keeps a struggle powerful.

God, I've kept this hidden because saying it out loud feels like too much. Give me one safe person and the courage to be honest. Heal what secrecy has been protecting.
