Prayer
Prayer gets treated as either a technique to master or a formality to perform, and Scripture presents it as neither. What comes through these passages instead is access — an open line offered without prerequisite. God tells Jeremiah to call while the prophet is shut in prison and the city is under siege, which establishes that the invitation doesn't depend on favorable circumstances. And the promise attached is worth noticing: not confirmation of what you'd already worked out, but "great and difficult things which you don't know." That assumes you're calling precisely because you're out of your depth. John locates our confidence in the hearing rather than the getting — being heard is the promise, and it addresses the real anxiety, which is usually whether anyone is on the other end. James takes it a step further and makes prayer horizontal: confess to one another, pray for one another. That's harder than private prayer and, he suggests, more healing, because secrecy is what keeps most struggles powerful. If your prayer life feels stalled, these verses may relocate the problem.
