1 Chronicles 16:11

“Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.”

Reflection

Two things are sought here, and the second is the interesting one. Seek his strength — that's what we usually come for, and there's no shame in it. Scripture repeatedly invites people to come for help. But then: seek his face. That's a different request entirely. A face is a person, not a resource. It's the difference between wanting what someone can do for you and wanting them. The verse holds both without embarrassment, which is kind. You're allowed to come needing strength. But it doesn't let the relationship stay purely transactional either. And the modifier at the end — continually — rules out treating this as a completed transaction. Not sought once, at conversion or in a crisis, and then filed away. Continually, as an ongoing orientation, the way you keep turning toward someone you love rather than checking them off.

Historical Context

Part of the psalm David appointed to be sung when the ark was brought to Jerusalem — a moment of national celebration and a call to sustained worship rather than a single event.

Application for Today

"Continually" is the demanding word. Seeking isn't a one-time discovery but an ongoing orientation. What would it look like to seek God today rather than assuming you already found him last year?

A Prayer

God, I've treated seeking you as something I finished. Renew it. I'm seeking your face today — not just your help, but you. Give me strength for what's in front of me.
