Psalm 16:11
“You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.”
Reflection
David locates joy in a place, and the place is a person. "In your presence is fullness of joy." Not in the resolution of his problems, not in an improved set of circumstances — in proximity to God. That's a claim worth testing against how we actually pursue happiness, which is almost always by rearranging conditions. Get the circumstances right and joy will follow, we assume. David suggests the causation runs elsewhere. Notice the word "fullness." Most joy we know is partial — real but thin, mixed with anxiety about how long it will last. What's described here is joy without that dilution, and it's tied to presence rather than events. The path of life leads somewhere, and the somewhere is not a destination of circumstances but of company. Which is why joy can survive circumstances that should have killed it, and why comfortable people can be so unhappy.
