Psalm 121:7-8
“Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.”
Reflection
This was a traveler's psalm, sung on genuinely dangerous roads by pilgrims heading to Jerusalem. That context sharpens it. "Your going out and your coming in" isn't poetic filler — it's the whole shape of a journey, departure and return, and by extension the whole shape of a life. The word "keep" repeats throughout the psalm like a refrain, and it means to guard, to watch over, to maintain. Notice what's promised and what isn't. Not that no harm will ever be encountered — the pilgrims knew better, and so do we. What's promised is keeping: a watching that doesn't lapse, and specifically the keeping of the soul. There's a distinction there worth holding onto. Bodies get hurt. Journeys go badly. The deeper preservation runs underneath those and isn't cancelled by them. And the timeframe closes the psalm with no expiration: from this time forth, and forevermore.
Historical Context
One of the Songs of Ascents, sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem on roads that were genuinely dangerous. The repeated word "keep" runs like a refrain through the whole psalm.
Application for Today
Read the scope honestly: your going out and coming in, from now on and forever. Whatever you're walking into today is covered by "going out." You are not stepping outside the range of his keeping when you leave the house.
A Prayer
Lord, keep me today — going out and coming in. Thank you that there's no gap in your watching and no place I go that's outside it. Guard my soul as much as my steps.
