“Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.”

David writes this from real anguish — the surrounding psalm is about betrayal by a close friend, and he admits he wants to grow wings and fly far away from all of it. This isn't advice from someone at ease. It's a word he preaches to himself in the middle of wanting to escape. The image is of transferring weight: cast your burden on the Lord, hand it over rather than carrying it yourself. And the promise attached is 'he will sustain you' — not necessarily remove the burden, but hold you up under it or after it's lifted. Sustaining is ongoing, a continual holding rather than a single rescue. The last line is precise: he won't allow the righteous to be moved. Not that you'll never be shaken — David is clearly shaken — but that you won't be permanently overthrown, dislodged from your foundation for good. Shaken, perhaps. Toppled, no. Peter later echoes this exact instruction, which suggests the early church found it as steadying as David did.

Lord, this burden is heavier than I can carry and I've been trying anyway. I cast it on you. Sustain me — hold me up when I can't hold myself. Thank you that you won't let me be permanently moved.
