Psalm 139:13-14
“For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.”
Reflection
"Knit together" is an unhurried image. Knitting is slow, deliberate, done stitch by stitch with attention — nothing about it suggests mass production or accident. David is describing a God who was present and involved at a stage no one else witnessed, including David himself. Then the response: "I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." That's a difficult sentence to say honestly. Most of us have a running inventory of what we'd change, and calling ourselves wonderfully made feels either arrogant or untrue. But notice what the praise is actually aimed at. It isn't self-congratulation — the works being marveled at are God's, not his own. The verse doesn't ask you to think highly of yourself. It asks you to think highly of the one who made you, and to let that settle something about your worth that self-assessment keeps unsettling. Being fully known and still deliberately made is the claim underneath.
Historical Context
From a psalm marveling that God knows the writer completely — his thoughts, his words before he speaks them, every place he might flee. The section on being formed in the womb is part of a larger meditation on being fully known.
Application for Today
When self-criticism runs loudest, notice this verse doesn't argue that you're impressive. It says you were made with intent by someone who was present for it. Try answering the inner critic with authorship rather than accomplishments.
A Prayer
God, I'm harder on myself than you are. You knit me together and called the work wonderful. Help me stop arguing with the maker about the making, and receive that I was intended.
