“Wait for Yahweh. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for Yahweh.”
Reflection
The verse begins and ends with the same command, and the repetition is doing the work: wait for the Lord... wait for the Lord. David bookends the instruction with itself, and in between places courage — be strong, take heart. That sandwich structure says something. Waiting apparently requires bravery, which is not how we usually think of it. We treat waiting as passive, the thing you do when you can't do anything else. David treats it as an active discipline that demands strength, the way holding a position under pressure does. And notice he's talking to himself. The whole psalm has swung between confidence and near-desperation, and it lands here, with David counseling his own soul to hold on. That's honest. Waiting well isn't a feeling that arrives; it's a thing you tell yourself to keep doing, sometimes repeatedly, in the same breath, because once wasn't enough to make it stick.
