Identity
Almost everyone is quietly building an identity out of something — performance, usefulness, other people's approval, the last thing that went well. The trouble is that every one of those foundations moves. Scripture consistently locates identity somewhere outside your own performance, and the verbs give it away: knit together, formed, chosen, called, loved, given. These are things done to you rather than achieved by you, which is precisely why they hold when your week doesn't. What's notable is that none of these passages ask you to think highly of yourself in the usual sense. The psalmist's praise for being fearfully and wonderfully made is aimed at the maker, not the self — the marveling is at God's work. Peter hands scattered outsiders four titles they did nothing to earn. And Paul describes the strangest foundation of all: not a better version of himself but Christ living in him, secured by someone who "loved me and gave himself up for me."
