Galatians 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.”
Reflection
This is one of the most radical statements about identity in Scripture, and it moves in a direction we don't expect. The path to becoming yourself runs through a death. "I have been crucified with Christ" — past tense, already accomplished. What follows isn't self-improvement but replacement: "it is no longer I who live, but Christ living in me." Paul isn't describing a better version of himself. He's describing a different occupant. That should sound like erasure, and yet Paul is one of the most vividly distinct personalities in the New Testament — sharp, argumentative, tender, entirely himself. Whatever this union does, it doesn't dissolve the person. Then the last clause, where all the weight lands: he lives by faith in the Son of God, "who loved me and gave himself up for me." Notice the singular. Not loved the world in general — loved me. Paul takes the most cosmic claim in his theology and makes it embarrassingly personal.
Historical Context
Paul is arguing against the idea that righteousness comes through rule-keeping. This personal statement anchors his case — his own life is evidence that identity rests on Christ rather than on performance.
Application for Today
If you're exhausted from self-improvement, notice Paul's model isn't a better version of himself — it's Christ living through him. The daily question shifts from "am I enough?" to "who is living here?"
A Prayer
Jesus, I'm tired of trying to become someone worth loving. You loved me and gave yourself for me already. Live in me today. Let my life run on your faithfulness rather than my performance.
