Zephaniah 3:17
“Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Reflection
This appears at the end of a book that is mostly severe warning, which makes it land like a door opening in a wall. And the imagery is almost uncomfortably tender. God is described not as tolerating his people but rejoicing over them — twice, in different words — and the second time with singing. There's something disarming about a God who sings over people. The middle phrase is the one that undoes most of us: "he will quiet you with his love." Not correct you, not instruct you — quiet you, the way someone soothes a distressed child. Anyone who has lived with a restless, self-accusing mind knows how badly that's needed and how rarely it's expected from God. We're prepared for evaluation. We're not prepared for delight. Zephaniah puts the Mighty One who saves and the one who sings in the same sentence, and doesn't seem to think they're in tension.
Historical Context
The closing of a short, severe book of judgment. After chapters of warning, Zephaniah ends with this unexpected picture of God's delight in his restored people.
Application for Today
Most of us can accept that God tolerates us. This verse claims something harder to receive: that he delights. Try sitting with the image of God quieting you with his love rather than correcting you. That's the picture offered here.
A Prayer
God, I find it easier to believe you tolerate me than that you delight in me. Quiet me with your love today. Let me hear that you're not disappointed — that you rejoice.
