“Yahweh's angel appeared to him, and said to him, "Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!"”
Reflection
The greeting is almost comic in context. Gideon is hiding — threshing wheat in a winepress, a cramped sunken space, specifically so raiders won't spot him. He is doing the opposite of warfare. And the angel addresses him: mighty warrior. Gideon's response is immediate objection. If God is with us, why has all this happened? And later: my family is the weakest, I am the least. He's not being falsely modest; by any visible measure he's right. But God addresses him by what he will become rather than what he presently is, and then sends him in "the strength you have" — not strength he'd need to acquire first. That's the pattern. The identity precedes the evidence for it. Gideon didn't become brave and then get called; he was called, argued, hesitated, asked for signs, and went anyway.
Historical Context
The angel of the Lord greets Gideon while he is threshing wheat in a winepress — hiding from Midianite raiders. Gideon immediately objects that his clan is weak and he is the least in his family.
Application for Today
God addressed Gideon by who he would become rather than who he currently was. If you're waiting to feel qualified before you act, notice the order here: the calling came first, and the identity followed the obedience.
A Prayer
God, I feel more like the man in the winepress than a mighty warrior. Thank you that you address me by what you intend, not by what I'm currently doing. Give me courage to step out.
