1 Peter 5:7
“Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
Reflection
The verb is vivid: cast. Not set down carefully, not manage — throw, the way you'd hurl something away from yourself. Peter isn't describing a gentle handoff but a decisive act of getting the weight off your own shoulders and onto someone else's. And notice the scope: all your anxiety, not a curated selection of the respectable worries. The whole tangled pile. Then the reason, and it's the part that makes the casting possible: because he cares for you. Without that, casting your anxiety on God would just be relocating it onto someone indifferent, which changes nothing. The instruction rests entirely on the character underneath it. You can throw the weight because the one catching it is not annoyed by it, not too busy for it, not keeping score of how often you come. He cares. The casting isn't a technique for feeling better; it's what naturally follows from believing that.
Historical Context
Peter writes to scattered, suffering believers, urging humility under God's hand. This instruction about anxiety sits directly after a call to let God lift them up in due time.
Application for Today
The word is "cast," not "set down gently" — it implies throwing something away from yourself with force. Try naming the specific anxiety and deliberately handing it over, on the ground that he cares. When it drifts back, cast it again.
A Prayer
God, I'm holding worries I was never meant to carry. I cast them on you now — all of them, not the presentable ones only. Thank you that the reason I can is that you care for me.
