Protection
The Bible's language of protection is layered and worth reading carefully, because it promises something specific rather than something magical. The imagery runs in two directions at once: secret place and shadow, which are intimate and imply nearness — and refuge and fortress, which are martial and imply strength against assault. God is described as both tender and formidable, and Scripture never thinks it has to pick one. What's promised is keeping. Not that no harm is ever encountered — the pilgrims who sang Psalm 121 walked genuinely dangerous roads and knew better, and so do we. What's promised is a watching that doesn't lapse, covering your going out and your coming in, with no gap and no expiration. And notice where the guarantee rests: on God's faithfulness rather than yours. Paul tells a frightened church not to be stronger but that the Lord is faithful, who establishes and guards. Their part is to be the object of those verbs. On days when your own steadiness is thin, that's the load-bearing detail in all of it.
