The servant wakes up, steps outside, and sees an army surrounding the city — horses, chariots, no visible escape. His panic is entirely reasonable. Elisha's response sounds absurd: don't be afraid, there are more with us than with them. By any count the servant can make, that's simply false. Then Elisha prays that the young man's eyes would be opened, and he sees the hills full of horses and chariots of fire. Nothing about the external situation changed. The enemy army was still there, still real, still hostile. What changed was the servant's ability to see the rest of what was true. That's the shape of this story, and it's honest about the fact that most of us are the servant rather than the prophet. Fear is usually a counting problem — we tally the threat with precision and the help not at all.
