Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
Reflection
These are Moses' words to Israel just before his death, and they're the source Joshua's own charge draws from a chapter later — the same reassurance passed down a generation. The command "be strong and courageous" is stated, then immediately grounded, and the ground is not the size of Israel's army but the presence of God: "Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you." The word "himself" adds weight — not an angel, not a delegated helper, but God in person. Then two promises stack up in the negative, which is often how the deepest reassurances land: "he will not fail you nor forsake you." Fail speaks to God's competence — he won't drop the ball, won't run out of strength at the crucial moment. Forsake speaks to his faithfulness — he won't walk away, won't decide you're not worth the trouble. Between those two, most of our fears are covered. We're afraid either that help won't be adequate or that we'll be abandoned. Moses answers both, and answers them not with a pep talk but with the character of the God who's coming along. Courage here is a conclusion drawn from company kept.
Historical Context
Moses is 120 years old and about to die; he's handing leadership to Joshua and preparing Israel to enter a land full of intimidating enemies. This is his parting encouragement, later quoted in Hebrews to reassure Christians facing hardship.
Application for Today
Sort your fear into its real question: is it "help won't be enough" or "I'll be left alone"? This verse answers both — God won't fail (he's competent) and won't forsake (he's faithful). Speak the promise that fits your particular fear, and take courage not from your own resources but from who's going with you.
A Prayer
God, I'm intimidated by what's ahead. Thank you that you yourself go with me — not a substitute, but you. You won't fail me and you won't forsake me. Let those two promises be enough to make me brave.
