1 John 5:14
“This is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.”
Reflection
John locates the confidence in the hearing, not in the getting. "He listens to us" is the promise, and it's easy to skim past on the way to asking whether we'll get what we requested. But being heard is not a small thing. Most of our anxiety in prayer is really uncertainty about whether anyone is on the other end. John says the line is open. Then the qualifier that people stumble over: "whatever we ask according to his will." That can sound like an escape clause, a way of explaining away unanswered prayer. Read more generously, it's a mercy. Would you actually want a God who granted every request exactly as worded, given how often we ask for things from partial information and momentary panic? The clause protects us from our own worst asks. It also quietly invites a different kind of praying — not just presenting demands, but wanting to know what he wants.
Historical Context
Near the close of a letter written so believers would know they have eternal life. This assurance about prayer is one of several confidence statements John offers to people uncertain of their standing with God.
Application for Today
Confidence in prayer rests on who's listening, not on how well you phrase it. And the "according to his will" clause isn't a loophole — it's protection from your own worst requests. Ask boldly, then hold the outcome open.
A Prayer
Father, thank you that you hear me — that's the part I forget. I'm asking for this. If it isn't in line with what you know is good, overrule me. I'd rather have your will than my request.
