“So we fasted and begged our God for this: and he was entreated by us.”
Reflection
The backstory is more interesting than the verse alone suggests. Ezra is leading a group of exiles back to Jerusalem, carrying a large amount of silver and gold through territory known for bandits. The obvious move is to request an armed escort from the king. But Ezra had already told the king that God's hand is on everyone who seeks him — and now felt he couldn't ask for soldiers without making his own words look hollow. So he was, in a sense, trapped by his own testimony. What follows is unglamorous and specific: they fasted, they asked, and God answered. The verse doesn't dramatize it. There's something honest in that reluctance to embellish. Ezra had put himself in a position where he genuinely had to depend on God rather than merely say he did, which is a different and more uncomfortable thing.
Historical Context
Ezra is leading exiles back to Jerusalem carrying substantial treasure through dangerous territory. He had told the king that God protects those who seek him, and was too ashamed to then request an armed escort.
Application for Today
Notice Ezra prayed because he'd said something publicly and then had to live with it. Faith sometimes puts you in positions where you must actually depend on God. That's uncomfortable, and it's often where the answer comes.
A Prayer
God, I've said I trust you and then quietly arranged a backup. Give me Ezra's kind of consistency. I'm asking you for this, and I'll wait for your answer rather than hedging.
