“It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”
Reflection
Where this sits matters enormously. Lamentations is a book of grief over a destroyed city, and the poetry surrounding these verses is genuinely bleak — the writer describes being walled in, weighed down, his prayer shut out. And then, right at the center of the book, this. Not a denial of the grief but a memory surfacing in the middle of it. The image is of a supply that doesn't deplete. Mercies "new every morning" means yesterday's failure didn't consume tomorrow's allotment; grace isn't a rationed resource you're spending down. Each morning brings a fresh portion, unearned again. And the conclusion drawn is about God's character rather than the writer's circumstances: great is your faithfulness. Nothing in his situation had improved when he wrote it. He simply remembered something true that his suffering had temporarily hidden, and said it out loud.
Historical Context
Lamentations mourns the destruction of Jerusalem, and this passage sits at the exact center of the book — surrounded on both sides by some of the bleakest poetry in Scripture.
Application for Today
If yesterday went badly, the supply of mercy did not go down with it. Tomorrow morning a fresh portion arrives. That's not permission to be careless — it's permission to stop dragging yesterday's failure into today as though grace were rationed.
A Prayer
Lord, yesterday was not my best and I've been carrying it. Thank you that this morning's mercy is new, not left over. Great is your faithfulness — help me live like I believe that today.
