Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”
Reflection
The gesture described is small and personal. God wiping tears from faces — not issuing a decree ending sorrow from a distance, but the intimate act of someone close enough to touch your face. In a book full of thrones and cosmic upheaval, the image chosen for comfort is a hand. Then the list of what's abolished: death, mourning, crying, pain. Notice mourning and crying are named separately from death itself. It isn't only the fact of loss that's undone but the grief that trails it — the ache that outlasts the funeral, the crying that comes months later without warning. The reason given is almost blunt: "the first things have passed away." Not improved or explained. Passed. For anyone in grief, this offers something specific — not a reason for the suffering, which Scripture often declines to give, but an ending. It doesn't ask you to stop crying now. It says the crying stops.
Historical Context
Part of John's vision of a renewed creation at the close of the Bible. The promise comes after extensive imagery of judgment and upheaval, describing God dwelling permanently with his people.
Application for Today
Grief is not answered here with an explanation but with a promise of an ending. If you're mourning, notice God is described doing the wiping himself — personally, close enough to touch. That's the comfort offered, and it doesn't require you to stop crying now.
A Prayer
God, I'm tired of grief and I can't fix it. Thank you that there's an ending — that you'll wipe the tears yourself. Hold that in front of me on the days the sorrow feels permanent.
