2 Corinthians 4:16-18
“Therefore we don't faint, but though our outward person is decaying, yet our inward person is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory, while we don't look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Reflection
Paul admits the decline without flinching. The outward person is wasting away — no denial, no pretense that faith halts aging or exhaustion. What he claims is a second process running underneath, invisible and opposite in direction: inward renewal, happening day by day. Two things are true at once, which is more honest than most encouragement. The phrase "day by day" is worth noticing. Not renewed once, permanently, but daily — which means it must be received again each morning. There is no stockpiling. Then the reframe: he calls his afflictions "light" and "momentary," which sounds outrageous from a man who was beaten, imprisoned, and shipwrecked. He isn't minimizing. He's weighing. Set against what he calls an eternal weight of glory, even severe suffering has a proportion. That's not denial of pain; it's a refusal to let pain be the largest thing in view. The things we can see are temporary. The unseen is what lasts.
Historical Context
Paul writes about the hardships of his ministry — being pressed, perplexed, and persecuted — while insisting these have not destroyed him. The passage contrasts visible deterioration with invisible renewal.
Application for Today
When you're depleted, notice Paul's word: renewed "day by day." Not stockpiled. You aren't meant to have enough for the whole road — only for today. Ask for today's portion rather than despairing that you can't see supply for the year.
A Prayer
God, the outward wearing down is obvious and the inward renewing isn't. Renew me anyway, day by day. Teach me to look at what I can't see rather than only what I can.
