2 Timothy 1:7
“For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
Reflection
Paul writes this to Timothy, a younger, apparently timid leader who seems to be shrinking back from a hard calling. The verse works by contrast — naming what God did not give, then what he did. The fear Timothy feels is real, but Paul's point is that it didn't come from God, so it doesn't get the final say over how Timothy acts. Then comes the alternative, three gifts that are almost a portrait of courage. Power — the capacity to act despite fear. Love — which, as another verse puts it, pushes fear out and turns attention away from self-protection toward others. And self-control (some translations say "sound mind") — a disciplined, clear-headed steadiness rather than a mind hijacked by panic. Notice these aren't feelings to summon but a "spirit" already given. Paul's counsel to a fearful person isn't "cheer up" but "remember what you've already been given, and act out of that." Fear may knock, but it's not the resident. The power, love, and sound mind are the actual furniture of a life shaped by God's Spirit — fear is the intruder that has to be shown it doesn't belong.
Historical Context
Paul writes from prison, near the end of his life, urging a hesitant Timothy to stay bold in ministry despite opposition. It's a mentor steadying a protégé who's tempted to retreat.
Application for Today
When fear tempts you to shrink back from something you're called to, name what God has actually given you instead — power to act, love to focus outward, a sound mind to think clearly. Then take the next step out of that, not out of the fear. The fear isn't from God, so it doesn't get to run the show.
A Prayer
God, when I want to shrink back, remind me that fear isn't the spirit you gave me. Stir up the power, love, and sound mind that are already mine in you. Help me act out of what you've given, not out of what I'm afraid of.
