Malachi 3:6 · WEB

Malachi 3:6

“For I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Reflection

The logic connecting the two halves is worth slowing down for. "I, Yahweh, don't change, therefore you are not consumed." God's constancy is offered as the reason for their survival — not their own faithfulness, which Malachi has spent the whole book criticizing. They had been offering blemished sacrifices, breaking faith, and asking cynically whether serving God was worth anything. And the answer to why they're still standing is: because I don't change. That's a strange comfort, and a real one. If the relationship depended on their consistency, it would have collapsed. The last book of the Old Testament closes a long history of a people repeatedly failing, and the reason there's still a story to tell isn't found in them. It's found in a God whose character doesn't fluctuate with how his people are behaving that decade.

Historical Context

The last book of the Old Testament, addressing a discouraged people who wondered whether serving God was worthwhile. God's unchanging character is offered as the reason they haven't been destroyed.

Application for Today

If your sense of God fluctuates with your performance or mood, this verse anchors somewhere steadier. He doesn't change. The variable in the relationship is you — which is worth knowing, because it means the ground is more stable than it feels.

A Prayer

God, I change constantly — my faith, my mood, my resolve. Thank you that you don't. Be the fixed point I steer by today rather than my own fluctuating sense of things.
